ASTM Committee E48 on Biotechnology was formed in 1985. E48 meets at least once a year in May and if necessary in October with about 10 members attending one day of technical meetings capped by a presentation on relevant topics in the Biotechnology industry. The Committee, with a membership of approximately 58, currently has jurisdiction of over 60 standards, published in the Annual book of ASTM Standards, Volume 11.06. E48 has 4 technical subcommittees that maintain jurisdiction over these standards. These standards have and continue to play a preeminent role in all aspects important to the identification of biological materials, GMP process validation, and renewable energy from agriculture residue.
