Officer Training Modules:

The training courses outlined below should begin to give committee officers and others a general knowledge of their duties and responsibilities. These modules are not intended to be an exhaustive reference on all aspects of ASTM policies and procedures; they summarize and highlight the basic information committee officers should know and make reference to other applicable Key Documents.

1. BALLOTING/HANDLING NEGATIVE VOTES
Learn to effectively move documents through the ASTM balloting process-from initiating a subcommittee ballot, through main committee and Society review. A review of the role of COS (Committee on Standards) is included. In addition, learn to get positive results from negative votes! 2. SUBCOMMITTEE CHAIRMAN'S DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The job of the subcommittee chairman is crucial to the success of standards development. Learn about the duties and responsibilities of this important position and how to effectively manage your subcommittee. 3. MAIN COMMITTEE OFFICERS' DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Main Committee Officers...the leadership core! Discussions will focus on the individual positions of Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary, and Membership Secretary. 4. CONDUCTING A MORE EFFICIENT MEETING
Sharpen your skills as a committee leader! This module will assist committee, subcommittee, and task group chairmen to facilitate meetings more efficiently. Information on meeting and agenda preparation, proper use of parliamentary procedure, time management skills, and useful follow-up techniques will be discussed. 5. STANDARDS DEVELOPMENT FORUMS
ASTM's superior web-based technology is making standards development quick and easy for our international membership. Learn how to accelerate standards development while receiving greater feedback from your members with the ASTM Interactive Standards Development Forums. This customized document development application provides a virtual collaborative environment for on- and off-line document editing/construction that is available 24 hours a day 7 days a week without special software requirements. 6. STRATEGIC PLANNING
Strategic planning is an essential process for business and it is an essential process for ASTM technical committees. Module discussion will focus on the benefits of strategic planning, how to initiate the planning process, elements to consider in developing a strategic plan, implementation strategies and resources that are available to assist ASTM committees in the strategic planning process. 9. VIRTUAL MEETINGS
ASTM International will soon be offering real-time interactive web conferences and meetings over the Internet using the PlaceWare Conference Center. Utilizing the technology requires only a web browser and a phone. Find out more about this new tool that will provide members, from any location, the opportunity to meet and work on-line to facilitate their standards development objectives. 10. ELECTRONIC BALLOTING
ASTM International introduced an electronic balloting process in 2001 to enable its members and customers to better meet their standardization objectives. This module will focus on the mechanics of the process and highlight recent enhancements that were engineered to provide access to a greater amount of information while reducing the time required vote on-line. Specific discussions will focus on gaining access to the ballot, downloading individual and collective ballot items, submitting negatives and comments, accessing a ballot after successful vote submission, and other technical information. 11. CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONS
Publicity is important for any organization, and ASTM's Corporate Communications department is there to advance your committee's activities. Publicity for your committee in ASTM Standardization News and industry publications can: 1) help you draw interested colleagues to standards development activities, 2) publicize award recipients, and 3) inform others in your field about that important standard you just finished or special news about the use of your standards, and more!
