ASTM WK86367
Revision of D4928-12(2018) Standard Test Method for Water in Crude Oils by Coulometric Karl Fischer Titration
Rationale
NOTE: The only thing being balloted is the yellow highlighted wording within the standard; which is solely the Evaporative Method that was incorporated into the existing Ch. 10.9 standard. By evaporating the water into the Karl Fischer titration cell, a much cleaner material than crude oil is actually titrated, minimizing matrix effects and allowing for many more samples to be analyzed before cell cleaning is necessary. Auto-injection of up to 50 samples tested consecutively improve the efficiency of the overall process. Sample preparation, analysis and data transfer can be achieved in about ten minutes for a typical crude oil. The method allows the sample to be collected at the point of interest and be analyzed without subsequent re-homogenization, thus eliminating such re-homogenization risk(s).The proposed action is to incorporate pre-evaporation method into the existing API 10.9 (ASTM 4928) methods for KF Titration, as well as, change the existing Scope as applicable for including the evaporative method.
