Rationale

An alternative method for measuring crack size, the Area Average Method, is proposed for inclusion in ASTM E1820. This method has been shown to provide equivalent accuracy and only slightly stricter crack curvature allowance with respect to the well-established 9-Point Average Method. The ballot item was revised following negatives and comments received during E08.07 sub-committee ballots 23-01 and 23-02.
