Revision of D8270-23b Standard Terminology Relating to Cannabis

Rationale

Project: 91-2023-05 Addition of the term Total Cannabinoids to D8270 Standards Terminology Related to Cannabis Rationale: There are multiple interpretations for what “total cannabinoids” means. Do you consider conversion from acidic forms to neutral forms? Are you talking about simply adding up all the quantifiable cannabinoids in a sample? How many cannabinoids should be included in the total? Then you have alternative word phrases such as, total active cannabinoids, or TAC. What does this mean? Is it the same as “total cannabinoids”? Without a standardized definition for what is meant by total cannabinoids, authorities having jurisdiction are left to define the term themselves. Having multiple definitions for the same term leads to confusion within the marketplace and the potential for misinterpretation. The proposed definition serves to provide a harmonized definition of total cannabinoids for the D37’s consideration so that it can start to be used more widely among industry sectors, academia, and regulatory bodies.
