Revision of D8270-23b Standard Terminology Relating to Cannabis

Rationale

Project: 91-2023-05 Addition of the term Consumer Product Containing Cannabinoids to D8270 Standards Terminology Related to Cannabis Rationale: Cannabinoids are being introduced into the international consumer products marketplace at a rapid pace. Because of this, the global cannabis industries, encompassing all its end uses including industrial hemp, need a standardized term for describing consumer products that contain cannabinoids in a clear and concise manner. ASTM Standard D8441 – Specification for an International Symbol for Identifying Consumer Products Containing Intoxicating Cannabinoids; and ASTM Standard D8449 – Specification for Label Content and Style, Format, Location, and Prominence of Elements for Consumer Products Containing Cannabinoids; Both, utilize a word phrase that perfectly describes the consumer products we are trying to differentiate from other consumer products in a way that is clear and straightforward: “consumer product containing cannabinoids.” Since the constituents of concern to many authorities having jurisdiction are the cannabinoids, the word phrase: “consumer product containing cannabinoids,” structured in ASTM D8441 and standardized in ASTM D8449, while a little lengthy does the job well. This ballot is to codify this term into ASTM D8270 Standard Terminology Related to Cannabis so that it can start to be used more widely among industry sectors, academia, and regulatory bodies.
