New Test Method for Additive manufacturing of medical devices – Test Method – Relative Density of Porous Structures via Gravimetric Analysis
1. Scope
This test method applies to additively manufactured lattice and porous materials. The method will designate a specific geometry of a test specimen. The method can be applied to any lattice/porous structure made with any material. This test method is limited to intentionally porous structures. It is not the intention of this test method to measure the density of materials that are greater than approx. 90% dense. Keywords

Most metal AM medical devices have a lattice/porous structure included in the design to encourage boney integration. The manufacturing of these structures can be sensitive to small changes in AM system behavior and calibration. Currently there is not a economical and easy way to verify the relative density/porosity of these structures. ASTM F1854 is not economical as a verification method and is destructive. This method would provide a simple and economical method of ensuring lattice/porous structures are being produced consistently during the AM process.
