ASTM WK90187

Revision of E1996-23 Standard Specification for Performance of Exterior Windows, Curtain Walls, Doors, and Impact Protective Systems Impacted by Windborne Debris in Hurricanes

Rationale

The purpose of this work item is to bring the wind-borne debris requirements for Risk Category III structures into alignment with what is currently specified in ASCE 7. Since the separate wind speed maps were first introduced in ASCE 7-10, there has always been a requirement to use the appropriate Risk Category map for proper determination of the wind-borne debris regions and wind zones that are then used to select the missile level in Table 3 of E1996. Section 26.12.3.1 of ASCE 7-22 states: “For Risk Category II buildings and other structures and Risk Category III buildings and other structures, except health care facilities, the wind-borne debris region shall be based on Figure 26.5-1B. For Risk Category III health care facilities, the wind-borne debris region shall be based on Figure 26.5-1C. For Risk Category IV buildings and structures, the wind-borne debris region shall be based on Figure 26.5-1D.” Figure 26.5-1B is the wind speed map for Risk Category II structures, Figure 26.5-1C is the wind speed map for Risk Category III structures and Figure 26.5-1D is the wind speed map for Risk Category IV structures.
