New Test Method for Determination of Trace Sulfur Compounds in Hydrogen Fuel by Thermal Desorption Gas Chromatography and Sulfur Chemiluminescence Detection (TD/GC/SCD)
1. Scope
This test method describes a procedure for the determination of sulfur compounds in hydrogen fuels by thermal desorption gas chromatography with sulfur chemiluminescence detection. This test method does not purport to identify all sulfur species in a sample. Only compounds that than can be trapped and desorbed by thermal desorption techniques, are eluted through the selected column under chromatographic conditions and are detectable by a sulfur chemiluminescence detector. Keywords
sulfur; gas chromatography; thermal desorption; sulfur chemiluminesence; hydrogen fuelRationale
Sulfur contamination in hydrogen fuel is known to poison proton exchange membranes (PEM). TD/GC/SCD allows for concentration of sulfur compounds, speciation, and equimolar selective detection of sulfur compounds in hydrogen fuel with detection limits in the parts per trillion volume (pptv) to parts per billion volume (ppb). This is one method to ensure hydrogen fuel quality through quantification of sulfur contamination.
