ASTM WK90600
Reinstatement of D5852-00(2007)e1 Standard Test Method for Erodibility Determination of Soil in the Field or in the Laboratory by the Jet Index Method (Withdrawn 2016)
Rationale
This ballot action seeks to reinstate D5852 and revise it to cover jet tests now being done on two different scales: 1/4-inch (6-mm) nozzle and 1/8-inch (3-mm) nozzle (Mini-JET). The original standard described a large device with a 1/2-inch (12.5-mm) nozzle that was portable, but cumbersome to use in the field. That standard was withdrawn in 2016. Action was taken to revise D5852 for the now more common 1/4-inch nozzle device, but that effort became bogged down by data interpretation issues. The Mini-JET came into common usage in the 2010s and a collaboration area was opened in subcommittee D19.25 to create a standard, but again the effort bogged down over data interpretation. Both size jet tests are now being used and since the equipment and test procedure are similar, it was decided to combine the two. The test method addresses obtaining the scour depth vs. time data only. There are now several methods to interpret the results to estimate critical shear stress and detachment rate coefficient for the soil. Applying these and choosing among them requires professional judgment, so these have been moved to appendices.
