Rationale

Since ASTM C1324 was originally designed for the analysis of modern mortars (as specified in ASTM C270), alternative methods of analysis and interpretation are often needed in historical mortars. Section 10.2 of C1324 states that historical mortars should be considered on an individual basis without any further guidance. This appendix is intended to serve as a non-mandatory guide to the potential challenges that may be encountered and approaches that may be used when evaluating the wide range of materials present in historical mortars. The appendix is not meant to prescribe specific methods and recognizes that different laboratories may follow different procedures that yield effective solutions. An emphasis is made on finding constraints where exact results are not possible. There are two sections to this ballot. The first includes proposed edits to the main document that refer to the new appendix in Sections 1.1 and 10.2. The second is the appendix itself.
