Revision of D7826-23b Standard Guide for Evaluation of New Aviation Gasolines and New Aviation Gasoline Additives

Rationale

While D7826 is only guidance material provided to assist a fuel blender or additive manufacturer in developing a data package for presentation to the aviation industry, it was noted that potential blending components already being discussed are available in multiple purity levels. It was suggested that it should be mentioned within D7826 there is likely to be an expectation that blending components be identified by some level of quality expectation, for example as an “aviation grade” blending component. While not a requirement, it was thought that it would benefit the user of the guide to be made aware of the expectation that blending components be designated by a quality level and, where practical, by an industry standard of some type. By identifying this minimum quality level at the beginning of development work, all subsequent testing could be performed at this designated quality level, avoiding concerns that production blends could be prepared from a component of lower quality than that with which the testing had been accomplished. This is a particularly important consideration for blending components which could be produced with measurable levels of other isomers, components, or contaminates. This consideration is true for both the production of an alternative aviation gasoline as well as a carrier solvent used with additives.
