ASTM WK91987
Revision of F3253-24 Standard Specification for Crosslinked Polyethylene (PEX) Tubing with Oxygen Barrier for Hot- and Cold-Water Hydronic Distribution Systems
Rationale
Project Scope: The scope of this project is to create a new Annex for the determination of PEX Material Designation Codes from requirements transferred from other locations in this standard to the Annex, to update the method for determining the PEX Material Designation Codes, and to revise as needed Terminology section 3 and Referenced Documents section 2 of this standard that are disrupted by the movement of content within the standard or are otherwise redundant. References to sizes are cleaned up to NTS. For consistency “compound” is replaced with “material” when referring to PEX material. Rationale: The “standard thermoplastic tubing materials designation code” definition in F3253 contains requirements for the user of this standard. It is a bad practice to place requirements within the definitions of terms. In the interest of preserving and clarifying these valuable requirements, the definition would be deleted, and the information contained moved to new Annex A1 that lays out the method for determining PEX Material Designation Codes. This revision follows closely the content of the recently approved revisions to F876 that resulted in a similar Annex A1 being created in that standard. Issues identified during that project are addressed in this project in a substantially similar way. It is the intention of the task group to harmonize both the technical content and the layout of PEX pipe and tubing standards as much as practically possible for simplicity of use.
