ASTM WK92051
Revision of F1506-22 Standard Performance Specification for Flame Resistant and Electric Arc Rated Protective Clothing Worn by Workers Exposed to Flames and Electric Arcs
Rationale
1. ASTM F1506 doesn’t have any requirements for garment label legibility. This hasn’t been an issue for years because most garments are dual certified to ASTM F1506 and NFPA 2112 and 2112 requires garment labels to pass a legibility test after 100 washes. Unfortunately, some pad print labels pass NFPA 2112’s test, but become illegible after real life wear and laundering. The US Federal Trade Commission requires all garments sold in the US to be permanently labeled or tagged with care instructions that “will not become separated from the product and will remain legible during the useful life of the product”. The proposed note reinforces the importance of label durability and legibility in the field. 2. ASTM F1506 and NFPA 2112 have similar requirements for identifying the manufacturer on garment labels, but NFPA 2112 includes additional information that should be incorporated into ASTM F1506.
