ASTM WK92292
Revision of D6866-24 Standard Test Methods for Determining the Biobased Content of Solid, Liquid, and Gaseous Samples Using Radiocarbon Analysis
Rationale
Biogenic carbon is important to properly quantify as it helps with regulatory compliance, can assist with substantiating mandated emission reductions, and validates applications for tax or carbon credits; and most importantly, allows stakeholders to analytically trace the locations of renewable content within the production and distribution systems. Knowing the content of biogenic carbon is of paramount importance to the renewable fuels industry due to local, state, U.S. and international goals of achieving carbon reductions as well as to help ensure consumers receive the correct biogenic volumes purchased. This revision proposes an Annex to D6866 that would update the precision and bias of reporting the biogenic content, percent modern carbon, of distillate fuels based upon prior studies and an inter-laboratory study in North America.
