New Specification for Additive manufacturing — Environment Health & Safety -- Qualification principles for life cycle assessment of parts produced with AM

1. Scope
1 Scope This document specifies relevant qualification areas for life cycle assessment of parts produced with all AM. It supports a coherent LCA approach, and therefore it combines the three potential product phases. 1. R&D phase 2. The manufacturing phase 3. The product life phase It will support the following activities within an LCA. a) the definition of the objective and the scope of the LCA; b) the life cycle inventory phase; c) the impact assessment phase; d) the evaluation phase. This document references the additive manufacturing (AM) workflow according to ISO/ASTM 52920 and derives relevant areas and process steps to LCA. It specifies typical system boundaries of AM processes (from sourcing of virgin material to post processing and the reuse of material) as well as along the entire product life cycle. Potential users of this standard include any person or organization that needs to refer to a standardized method when announcing results for example energy consumption and greenhouse gases associated with the quantification of AM products and processes. The standard will not contain a detailed description of the methodology of LCA, nor does it specify the methods specific to the individual phases of LCA. This document does not apply to toxicities and other health and safety aspects. The intended application of the results of life cycle inventories or life cycle inventories is taken into account in the definition of the objective and the scope of the study. The usage of the Life cycle inventory (LCI) based at the ISO/ASTM 52920, can be used for LSA in a segmented or coherent way.

Rationale

No such standard presently exists. Additionally: Life cycle assessment is defined as: A cradle-to-grave or cradle-to-cradle analysis technique to assess environmental impacts associated with all the stages of a product's life, which is from raw material extraction through materials processing, manufacture, distribution, and use. EU directive EU Green Deal EU taxonomy in particular, this includes: — AM material developers and suppliers — AM machine developers and suppliers — Users of AM materials and machines - Users of AM parts/ parts that were produced using AM (?) - Sustainability service providers / LCA consultants / platform operators with focus on AM, The LCA relevant aspects on the application of the AM produced part, will be targeted within this standard as well. Once approved, this standard will carry the designation ISO/ASTM 52964 (per the PSDO agreement between ASTM & ISO).
