ASTM WK92832

Revision of A961/A961M-24b Standard Specification for Common Requirements for Steel Flanges, Forged Fittings, Valves, and Parts for Piping Applications

Rationale

The definition for "quenching" found in A961 is inconsistent with the definition found in ASTM A941. A941 states that quenching is to be done in a fluid while A961 mandates cooling in a liquid. There are some specifications and materials covered by A961, such as the martensitic stainless grades in A182, which are successfully quenched in air or other gasses. This ballot seeks to harmonize the definition of quenching between A961 and A941 and defaults to the term "fluids" so that quenching in air or other gasses may be permitted in A01.22 standards.
