New Practice for Quantitative Inspection for Cast Metal Surfaces
1. Scope
1.1 This practice covers the quantitative inspection of steel casting surface roughness characteristics using a Surface Variogram Roughness (SVR) technique. The objective SVR analysis is a digital area profiling method of characterizing surfaces that results in a single parameter expressed in millimeters. This practice is intended to be applied to point cloud data collected through either imaging or scanning area profiling methods. Keywords

Gage R&R for surface inspection of castings is poor due to human interpretation of comparator plates, which have severity levels that are not mathematically or statistically generated. This quantitative method of surface roughness inspection removes the subjectivity of a human inspector and uses digital representations of the roughness comparator plates to yield the final roughness level. The practice lays out the mathematics used in calculating surface variogram roughness (S_VR) value from a point cloud generated by inspectors in steel foundries. This S_VR value can then be used to accept or reject castings at the producer level without the reliance on inspector interpretation, reducing subjectivity and uncertainty of actual roughness levels.
