ASTM WK92983
New Specification for Components used in Expansive Hydraulic Cement Systems
1. Scope
This specification covers expansive components used with Portland cements that when combined and mixed with water, form an expansive component system that, after setting, increases in volume to a significantly greater degree than Portland cement paste. The expansive components covered by this specification are intended to be used in conjunction with hydraulic Portland cement at the time of concrete batching and mixing for the purpose of creating an expansive component system as defined in ACI 223 for shrinkage-compensating concrete production. Keywords
shrinkage-compensating concrete; expansive component; expansive cement componentRationale
The current industry method for producing shrinkage-compensating concrete in most projects is through introduction of a cementitious additive at the time of batching. These materials have historically been categorized as an ASTM C494 Type S admixture or other generic classification. The industry has asked for a more applicable standard which these materials can be qualified for use and more appropriately tested for conformance for the properties they impart to the mixture. Previous actions by the subcommittee to incorporate these materials into existing standards were not accepted. It was determined through discussion among subcommittee members and in response to comments from voters that a new, separate specification should be drafted to properly address the qualification of these materials.
