New Classification for Continuous Monitoring and Adaptive Control (CMAC) as a Component of Stormwater Control Measures

1. Scope
This standard is intended to identify and define a continuous monitoring and adaptive control (CMAC) solution, including the collective system as well as its individual parts, that is commonly used as a stormwater control measure (SCM) component.
Keywords
real-time control; adaptive management
Rationale

Continuous monitoring and adaptive control (CMAC) is increasingly being used to increase hydrologic and water quality benefits of stormwater control measures, although it is still considered a relatively new and innovative technology within the stormwater industry. As such, there currently is no standard description or definition as to what comprises a CMAC system. This standard seeks to identify and define the components that are part of a CMAC system and describe how they interact to create the collective CMAC solution. This will ensure consistency in the composition of CMAC systems to which design guidance and performance evaluation efforts are applied. It is anticipated that stormwater designers, managers, and regulators will use this standard definition for CMAC solutions, thus making it easier to develop applicable design guidance and/or performance evaluation protocols within their jurisdiction.
