New Practice for Open-Hole and Filled-Hole Flexure Testing of Polymer Matrix Composite Laminates
1. Scope
This practice will provide instructions for modifying the D7264/D7264M unnotched laminate flexure test method to determine open-hole and filled-hole flexure properties. Requirements for specimen geometry, test setup geometry, failure mode characterization and property computation will be specified for testing specimens that contain either an open hole or a close-tolerance fastener or pin installed in a hole. The composite material forms will be limited to continuous-fiber reinforced polymer matrix composites in which the laminate is both symmetric and balanced with respect to the test direction. Keywords

These are tests that are performed by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in the aerospace industry to complement D5766/D5766M for open-hole tension, D6484/D6484M for open-hole compression, and D6742/D6742M for filled-hole tension and compression. Compared to in-plane tests, flexural loading imparts a reduced stress concentration factor at the hole in a notched laminate; thus, higher strains can be achieved in the outermost longitudinally oriented plies under bending than under in-plane loading. This capability is taken advantage of in structural analysis of bolted joints under combined in-plane and bending loads.
