Rationale

This specification requires measuring and reporting distillation volume percent of the primer at two temperatures. The standard test method for performing the distillation test (ASTM D402) was withdrawn in 2023. Furthermore, testing labs reported that it is becoming increasingly more difficult to perform the distillation test on primers found on the market today. It has been suggested to replace the distillation test with the nonvolatile content test found in Test Methods D6511 and use the dry residue from this test to determine the penetration and solubility of the solids portion of the primer. Other substitutes could be discussed by the task group as well.
