New Guide for Facilitating Circular Processing of Textile Waste

1. Scope
The scope of this guide includes sorting, grading, classification and handling of textile waste to enable repair, reuse, recycling or other processes that extend the lifecycle and enable non-virgin input into new products.
Keywords
collection; disassembly; identification
Rationale

Based on the report from the Standards Needs for Circular Textiles Workshop held in 2023 and published by ASTM in November 2024, one critical missing area of standardization is related to textile sorting and grading to enable textile repair, reuse, and recycling, which are three of the possible ways to extend and circularize textile product life cycles. This guide will provide links to other standards (such as practices, specifications, and test methods) that will enable retailers, brands, recyclers, and others interested in circular textile business models to increase their engagement and ability to process textiles for circularity.
