New Guide for The Characterization of Matrix Graphite

1. Scope
This guide covers the characterization and control methods that can be used for the qualification and production of the graphite matrix and subsequently the (non-fuelled) spherical or cylindrical fuel elements for use in a High Temperature Reactor.
Keywords
matrix graphite; pebbles; compacts; coated particle fuel
Rationale

Some designs of High Temperature Reactors, such as the Molten Salt Reactor, and the (Very) High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor use TRISO or coated fuel particles. These fuel particles are embedded in a graphite matrix, which is then typically shaped into spheres (pebbles) or cylinders (compacts). This guide covers techniques that are suitable for the selection of starting materials and those that can be used to monitor the element production process. This guide does not cover fuel performance. The aim of this guide is to support national labs, researchers, HTR fuel developers and HTR fuel manufacturers.
