ASTM WK93978

Revision of B899-24 Standard Terminology Relating to Non-ferrous Metals and Alloys

Rationale

Review and or add from From A941: solution heat treatment, n- heating a steel object to a suitable temperature, holding it at that temperature long enough to cause one or more constituents to enter into solid solution, and then cooling it rapidly enough to hold such constituents in solution.Discussion—Solution heat treatment does not require that all constituents are dissolved into the solid solution. In particular, for certain alloys (such as stabilized stainless steels), reactive metal carbides and nitrides (NbC, NbN, TiC, TiN, etc.) may remain in material that has received a solution heat treatment.
