Revision of C1363-24 Standard Test Method for Thermal Performance of Building Materials and Envelope Assemblies by Means of a Hot Box Apparatus

Rationale

There have been stalled conversations over the past few years about potentially standardizing the U-Factor results from this test. Generally, C1363 is used to determine a surface-to-surface thermal resistance (R-Value), so the specific film coefficients (wind speeds) used during the test are irrelevant. However, the method also allows the calculation of overall thermal resistance (Ru), and thermal transmittance (U), which are dependent on the specific film coefficients in place during the test and can vary greatly depending on those choices. Because of this, a "standardized" value is desirable.
