ASTM WK94187

Revision of F2098-24 Standard Specification for Stainless Steel Clamps for Securing SDR9 Cross-linked Polyethylene (PEX) Tubing and SDR9 Polyethylene of Raised Temperature (PE-RT) to Metal Insert and Plastic Insert Fittings

Rationale

The tolerance for W1 and W2 listed in Table 1 on the latest revision of F2098 was improperly defined as the tolerance for the strip steel prior to the formation of the clamp. The formation of the clamp causes the band with to vary based on the the geometry of the stamping. This dimension was only reference on the previous revision. By making this dimension critical in order to differentiate between Design 1 and Design 2, and listing an incorrect tolerance on W1 and W2, there is an issue where any manufacturer of current production PEX clamps will not be able to meet regulatory standards due to a possible out of tolerance width. The recommendation is to define the critical area to be measured and to update the tolerance associated with W1 and W2.
