ASTM to Hold Climate and Community Mapping Workshop

The new guide, designated E3460, aims to identify communities threatened by the cumulative impacts of changing climate, using data-driven screening tools.

Apr 03, 2025

ASTM’s environmental assessment, risk management, and corrective action committee (E50) will host a workshop on Apr. 9, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on how to use its climate and community mapping standard guide.

The new guide, designated E3460 (developed as WK76938),  aims to identify communities threatened by the cumulative impacts of changing climate, using data-driven screening tools.

“This particular standard guide was developed because there are a lot of online mapping tools that people can use, especially those aimed at communities, to try and look at what kinds of climate risks might be in front of them,” said E50 vice chair Stephanie Fiorenza in Standardization News. “But while they seem easy to use, they rely on different sources of information and are queried differently, so you have to be a more sophisticated user to get value from them. We developed this guide to try to help people become educated users of these types of tools.”

The training session, available in-person at ASTM standards development meetings in Toronto, or virtually via Zoom, will teach attendees about:

  • Using the new ASTM Standard Guide for Climate and Community Mapping.
  • Accessing environmental data layers from trusted sources like the ArcGIS Living Atlas.
  • Creating maps with ArcGIS Online to support community decision-making.

The workshop will be valuable for government officials, environmental professional, or nonprofit workers looking to bolster their communities’ climate action. To register, please visit the event page.
