ASTM International’s additive manufacturing technologies committee (F42) is developing a new material testing standard for tensile properties of filaments.

This proposed standard (WK82320) could be used to determine basic performance information on the raw materials used in the most common types of 3D printers on the market.

According to ASTM International member Haibin Ning, who is leading the development effort, the standard “can help users from labs to industries, especially aviation, aerospace, automotive, and defense, to select the filament that meets their requirements. It can also facilitate quality control and optimization of filament production for the manufacturers.”

This effort directly relates to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals #9 and #12 on innovation and responsible consumption and production.
