The standard will be used for describing coal combustion products in field investigations for beneficial use.

Jun 26, 2025

ASTM International’s environmental assessment, risk management and corrective action committee (E50) invites any interested party to join in the development of a proposed standard for describing coal combustion products in field investigations for beneficial use.

The proposed standard (WK94485) will inform users about approaches to identifying and describing coal combustion products encountered, including drill samples and test pit samples collected during field investigations of coal combustion products (CCP) deposits.

“Existing standards for identification and classification of drilling and test pit samples focus on natural soil materials,” says ASTM member Eric Hageman. “While coal combustion products exhibit similar particle size ranges as natural soils, CCPs are man-made materials, and the beneficial use of CCPs requires specific characteristics be identified and reported during field investigations.”

This effort directly relates to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #7 on affordable and clean energy.

ASTM welcomes participation in the development of its standards. Become a member at www.astm.org/JOIN.
