ASTM International has awarded three graduate scholarships this year. The objective of the ASTM scholarship program is to enhance a student’s knowledge, understanding and application of ASTM International and its standards.

The $10,000 scholarship rewards graduate students (master’s or doctoral) who have demonstrated high levels of interest in or involvement with ASTM standards. The 2014 recipients are below.

- Mahendran Balasubramanian is a doctoral student in the Department of Design, Housing and Merchandising at Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Oklahoma. His research focuses on clothing systems, anthropometrics and human modeling. A graduate of Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama, where he received an M.S. in apparel sciences and design, Balasubramanian also holds a B.Tech. in fashion technology from Anna University, Tamil Nadu, India. His research findings on the anthropometric dynamics of pregnant women are currently being reviewed by ASTM Subcommittee D13.55 on Body Measurement for Apparel Sizing.

- Jenny Hill is a doctoral student of environmental engineering at the University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She is currently researching the optimization of water management in extensive green roof systems, and references green roof standards from ASTM Committee E60 on Sustainability. A graduate of the University of Birmingham, Birmingham, United Kingdom, where she received a B.Sc. in chemistry with analytical science, Hill also holds a M.Sc. in forensic science from King’s College London, and an M.A. in landscape architecture from the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design, also in the U.K.

- Mohsen Seifi is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio. His research area is the mechanical reliability of materials in various naval, aerospace and biomedical applications, and he has used ASTM standards developed by Committees B07 on Light Metals and Alloys and E08 on Fatigue and Fracture extensively. He earned an M.S. in materials science and engineering from Case Western, and a B.S. in materials engineering from Amirkabir University of Technology in Tehran, Iran.
