Philippe J. Champagne, Ph.D., president of Champagne Coal Consulting Inc. in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, has been appointed chairman of ASTM International Committee D05 on Coal and Coke. The committee, with a membership of 400, oversees 75 standards related to the effective industrialization of coal and coke derived from coal, including classification, sampling and preparation. 

Champagne works on several D05 subcommittees and is secretary of Subcommittee D05.29 on Major Elements in Ash and Trace Elements of Coal. D05 recognized his contributions with the R.A. Glenn Award in 2005. A member of ASTM International since 1985, Champagne also serves on Committee E06 on Performance of Buildings.

Champagne’s work is focused on research and research management in coal utilization, liquefaction and gasification, as well as in metallurgy, non-destructive testing and power line vibration studies. He began his career as a research scientist at Natural Resources Canada in Ottawa, and then moved onto SaskPower in Regina, Saskatchewan, where he spent 24 years and held various roles of increasing responsibility, including research chemist; manager of coal, gas and environmental; and project leader, coal utilization. He began his consulting business in 2005.

Outside ASTM International, Champagne is a member of the Chemical Institute of Canada. A graduate of the University of Ottawa where he earned a B.Sc. (honors) and his Ph.D. in chemistry, Champagne also holds a Dipl.T. in chemistry from Algonquin College in Ottawa.
