ASTM International announced that it will sponsor Brianna Chavez, an industrial engineering student at Arizona State University, for the 2017 Washington Internships for Students of Engineering (WISE) program. This announcement coincides with “Girl Day” of Engineers Week, an effort to encourage more girls and young women to pursue engineering careers.

WISE is a highly competitive, 10-week summer program in Washington, D.C., offered to about a dozen students each year. The program provides housing and a stipend to outstanding junior and senior engineering students who want to learn how engineers can contribute to U.S. public policy.

From a young age, Chavez has been interested in promoting health. She is interested in exploring how public policy can support health information technology advances that have the potential to improve healthcare systems worldwide. 

In her application, Chavez, a student member of ASTM International, said, “With the proper incentive and support, the long term benefits of health IT are increased efficiency, few medical errors, and an overall more enjoyable experience for patients and providers.”

Notably, ASTM International has a significant footprint in the health and medical field.
