The 2009 ASTM International Walter C. Voss Award has been given to Nicholas J. Carino, Ph.D., a concrete technology consultant from Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

The Voss Award is presented annually to an engineer or scientist who has made notable contributions in the field of building technology. Carino was honored for his outstanding contributions that have advanced the state of knowledge and applications for nondestructive test methods and test methods in general for evaluating the performance of concrete.

Carino, who joined ASTM International in 1974, is an honorary member of Committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates and currently serves as a member at large of the C09 executive subcommittee. An ASTM fellow and former chair of Committee C09, Carino received the Katharine and Bryant Mather Award from the committee earlier this year.  He has received several other ASTM awards for his standards development work, including the ASTM Award of Merit, the Frank E. Richart Award, and the Robert J. Painter Award, a joint award from ASTM International and the Standards Engineering Society.

An expert in the field of concrete technology and nondestructive testing, Carino spent most of his professional career as a research structural engineer in the Building and Fire Research Laboratory at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, Md. In 2004, he retired from NIST after 25 years of service and began his consultancy work, which includes the position of affiliated consultant for the Cleveland, Ohio, office of Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates Inc.

Outside ASTM International, Carino is a fellow of the American Concrete Institute and a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the International Concrete Repair Institute. He holds a B.S. in civil engineering, and an M.S. and a Ph.D. in structural engineering, all from Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y.
