Proficiency Testing Samples for Construction Laboratories
The ASTM Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory (CCRL) distributes pairs of proficiency samples for eight different construction materials. These samples are available on a subscription basis and scheduled for distribution throughout the year. When these samples are prepared, additional samples are stored and made available after the proficiency testing of the samples is complete.
Extra samples prepared as part of CCRLs Proficiency Samples Programs may be used to:
• Evaluate problems with equipment or procedures;
• Train new technicians;
• Set up new equipment; and
• Perform research using expertly prepared samples.
Eight categories of samples include portland cement, concrete blended cement, masonry cement, concrete masonry units, masonry mortar, pozzolan and steel reinforcing bar.
The Proficiency Samples Programs are overseen by ASTM Committees C01 on Cement and C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates.

Calibration Standards Available for Use with X-ray Fluorescence Equipment in the Chemical Analysis of Hydraulic Cement
Eight portland cement samples are available from the ASTM Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory (CCRL). These samples are for use with X-ray Fluorescence equipment in the chemical analysis of hydraulic cement.
Vacuum sealed to prevent moisture uptake, the standards are the same cements used in the Portland Cement Proficiency Sample Program. The data collected during this program is used in establishing certificate values for these standards.
Each standard consists of a 30 gram sample placed in a glass vial sealed in a plastic pouch.
In selecting these cements as calibration standards, CCRL identified cements that would supplement the current existing standards. The component percentages of these cements were specially selected for their uniqueness from other cements currently being used in calibrating XRF.
