ASTM International has opened registration for a live training course titled, “Sustainable Materials & Products: Biodegradability and Biobased Content Definitions, Standards, Claims and Certification.”
The course, held in three sessions of two days each, covers the basics of degradability and biodegradability. This includes the differences and similarities between them, as well as the basics of non-petroleum-based content in materials and products. Two of these sessions will also be the first trainings ever held at ASTM’s office in Singapore, with the third offering in Orlando, Florida.
The course instructor is Kelvin Okamoto, a 30+ year industry veteran and president of Green Bottom Line, which focuses on sustainable materials and packaging development, commercialization, testing, and certification. Okamoto also serves as chair of the ASTM subcommittee on environmentally degradable plastics and biobased products (D20.96).
Topics covered will include definitions, test methods and specifications, certification agencies and their requirements, and claim requirements in the US. This course also identifies biodegradable materials and additives (plastic and fiber-based) and the basics of composting.
