ASTM International Committee B05 on Copper and Copper Alloys has recognized Thomas Pilkington, manager of quality control engineering at Aurubis, Buffalo Inc., Buffalo, New York, with ASTM’s highest organizational recognition for individual contributions, the Award of Merit.

Pilkington received the award, which includes the accompanying title of ASTM fellow, for his outstanding leadership, technical contributions and dedicated service to Committee B05.

A member of ASTM International since 1988, Pilkington was B05 chairman from 2004 to 2010 and currently chairs the Editorial and Publications subcommittee (B05.91). An active participant in several B05 groups, he has contributed to the development and revision of more than 30 ASTM international standards. He was honored with the Copper Club Award in 2007 and the Arthur Cohen Memorial B05 Distinguished Service Award in 2013. In addition to B05, Pilkington serves on Committees E04 on Metallography, E06 on Performance of Buildings, E35 on Pesticides, Antimicrobials and Alternative Control Agents, and E60 on Sustainability.

Pilkington is a graduate of the Erie County Technical Institute in Amherst, New York. He began his career in the metallurgical department of Anaconda American Brass in Buffalo, New York, in 1969 and has worked in positions of increasing responsibility in that division ever since. The company has been acquired by various other outlets during his tenure, and was known as the Atlantic Richfield Co., Outokumpu American Brass and Luvata Brass before being acquired by the German company Aurubis in 2011.
